Basement Waterproofing

Think about all the things you have in your basement. Waterproofing your basement would be a good idea to help protect your belongings.

Have you remodeled it so that it is the perfect game room, exercise room, or family room full of furniture, equipment, and electronics? Or is it used more for storing your family’s prized possessions, such as all your old family photographs? What would it look like if your basement were to fill with an inch or so of water? Just think about all the things that would be lost. While some things, such as furniture and electronics could be replaced, others including the treasured family memories captured in photographs could not. A flooded basement takes a real toll. You have the cost of replacing any replaceable items, the cost of fixing the source of the leak, the loss of the space while the repairs are being carried out, and the tough emotional toll that they entire process will take.

You can prevent all of this just by waterproofing your basement. Two very popular methods of basement waterproofing include a liquid membrane which is applied to the interior of the space or a sheeting membrane attached to the exterior of the space. Cement is another popular basement waterproofing option, however it is very vulnerable to shifting once it is installed.

Sodium Bentonite clay is another common method of waterproofing a basement. When applied properly this material creates a watertight seal that prevents any moisture from entering your basement. Concrete and asphalt are combined in another type of waterproofing system, however it is much more complicated and expensive. There are pros and cons to any method of waterproofing your basement. You will need to look at your unique circumstances to determine which method is right for you.
